Listen to a discussion about digital death with artist Oreet Ashery, researcher Korina Giaxoglou and author Elaine Kasket, chaired by artist Audrey Samson. They will each present their research on how death, dying and mourning are experienced through digital technologies such as social media. 

Giaxoglou will talk about the promises and limits of social media for sharing stories of dying, death and mourning online with and for networked audiences. 

Kasket’s research looks at the problems of digital afterlife and how corporations such as Facebook make decisions that impact millions of people’s experiences of loss and mourning. 

Ashery will explore these issues and discuss her film ‘Revisiting Genesis’ and her newly commissioned film ‘Dying Under Your Eyes’, which is part of the ‘Misbehaving Bodies’ exhibition. This film was made on her iPhone and explores the recent death of her father. 

Samson will lead the group discussion from her ongoing research into death and digital data erasure.  

There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions at the end.

Oreet Ashrey, artist

Oreet Ashery

Artist

Oreet Ashery (b.1966 Jerusalem) is a UK-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice includes time-based image, performance, text, sound and music. In 2017, Ashery won the 10th Film London Jarman Award, and her work has been exhibited and performed all over the world. She is currently an associate professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.

Korina Giaxoglou

Artist

Korina Giaxoglou is a Lecturer in English Language & Applied Linguistics at the Open University, UK. Her research focuses on sharing stories, with a special focus on modes of affective positioning in digital mourning. Her research monograph on ‘Sharing Small Stories of Mourning Online’ is forthcoming by Routledge.

Elaine Kasket

Author

Dr Elaine Kasket is a psychologist, writer, speaker and public intellectual. She is the author of ‘All the Ghosts in the Machine: The Digital Afterlife of Your Personal Data’, published by Little Brown UK/Robinson in 2019, and she has also published many academic journal articles, book chapters, and blog pieces on death and the digital.

Audrey Samson

Facilitator

Audrey Samson is an artist-researcher currently resident at the Somerset House Studios as a member of the duo FRAUD. She co-leads the Digital Arts Computing BSc and is a lecturer in Fine Arts (Critical Studies) in the Art Department at Goldsmiths. She explores the intersection of technology and critical ecologies.
