![POOR LAW ri:lilf axd hospital accommodation. The administrative area of the Poor Law iVuthority extends be- yond the Borough, and as the latter is only a section of the area, I am unable tO' obtain figures as to the amoucit of Poor Law relief in Chatham. There is a large Poor Law rnfirmarv. Naval and Militarv Hos- pitals, and a Ceneral Ho'S])ital with loo lieds. To this latter institu- tion is attached a very large out-|)atient dei)artment. The Hospital is well organised and administered, and has of late years added materi- ally tO' its apparatus and resources for treatment, which is entirely gratuitous. Its value tO' the district ('annot be over-estimated. A return of new cases of Pauper Sickness is sent every week by the Clerk to the Cuardians. The total numl)er during 1913 was 476, an average of nine i)er week. The majority are amongst old peo])le, and are chronic in c'haracter. B SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DISTRICT. Chatham ])ossesses an abundant water supply. The source is in the chalk formation, where there are deep borings with horizontal headings or adits to inc'rease the supply. There is also an additional su])])ly, limited in amount, ol)tained l)y a boving into the lower greensand. The Amterworks are situated in the Luton Valley, and the watershed area com])rises an extensive slo])e from the North D owns. Prom the Waterworks the water is pumped to the storage reservoirs, which have a joint ca]:»acity of over 9.000.000 gallons. The two largest are situated on the Rainham Road, and a smaller one at Brid gewoo'd Gate on the Maidstone Road. The supplv is constant, the pressure is good, and there is no lack of water. The present average daily ('onsumption is about t6 gallons ])er head. This amount will be materially increased when the water carriage system of sewerage is in general operation, and ])rol)ably 25 tO' 30 gallons per head will be rc(]uired. By the courtesy of the Secretary to the Waterworks Company. I ha^e been favoured with iiarticulars of the most recent analyses (both chemical and l)acteriological) of their water sup]:)ly. which are appended : - CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OK WATER.
