    INFECTIOUS DISEASES. 8. Scarlet fever, although showing a diminution in the number of notifications compared with the previous quarter, continued prevalent throughout the administrative county. During the quarter 1,555 cases were notified, compared with 2,288 during the preceding quarter, and 937 in the June quarter of last year. Twenty-two deaths were registered from this disease during the quarter compared with 37 in the previous quarter. 9. During the quarter 355 cases of diphtheria were notified compared with 469 in the previous quarter and 185 in the corresponding quarter of last year. The deaths registered from this disease numbered 28 and shows an increase of 4 compared with the previous quarter. 10. Only 3 cases of enteric fever were notified during the quarter compared with 91 in the preceding quarter. No deaths were registered during the quarter. 11. There were 12 notifications of cases of puerperal fever and 28 notifications of puerperal pyrexia, compared with 15 and 29 respectively in the previous quarter. During the quarter 12 cases were admitted to hospitals under the county scheme and the services of consultants were utilised in 8 cases. 12. The number of notifications of ophthalmia neonatorum received during the quarter was 22 compared with 31 in the preceding quarter. In-patient hospital treatment under the county scheme was provided in respect of 5 cases. 13. An increase was recorded in the number of cases of cerebro-spinal fever notified from 5 in the previous quarter to 20 during the past quarter. Six deaths were registered compared with 3 in the previous quarter. 14. The number of deaths registered from measles was 55 compared with 48 in the previous quarter ; while the deaths from whooping cough numbered 13 compared with 23. Diarrhoea and enteritis under two years of age was responsible for 33 deaths compared with 24 during the previous quarter. CLERICAL STAFF. 15. The following members of my clerical staff have been absent from duty during the quarter on account of sickness :— 6. Duff, from 28th May to 2nd June, and from 5th to 16th June inclusive. W. A. Grainger, from 9th to 19th June inclusive. and I recommend that they be granted sick leave with salary in accordance with the county arrangement, less National Health Insurance Benefit. VACCINATION. 16. No. 40 (WINGATE) DISTRICT.—-I regret to report the death, on 19th April, 1934 of Dr. W. A. G. Russell, of Somerville, Wingate, Public Vaccinator for this district, which comprises the parishes of Castle Eden, Hutton Henry, Monk Hesledon, Nesbit, Sheraton-with-Hulam, and Wingate (excluding Wheatley Hill Colliery and Wingate Lane). I have appointed, subject to your confirmation and the approval of the Minister of Health, Dr. R. Gordon Russell, of Airlie, Blackballs, West Hartlepool,, as from 1st May, 1934, on the same scale of fees as applied to Dr. W. A. G. Russell, i.e., Births .... 1/- *Subsequent Cases.
