    and irretrievable loss of one whose soul had been in a manner amalgamated with his own; between whom and himself, there had long been. not a sympathy merely, but a unity almost of conscious- ness. To the ordinary weight of the at- mosphere we become, on account of its unceasing pressure altogether insensi-_ ble; but the sudden removal. of this imperceptible weight would occasion agonizing convulsions. In like manner, when the unwearied assiduities of do- mestic tenderness, of which from long familiarity with them we are apt to grow almost unconscious, are by the most solemn of human events for ever with- drawn, our eyes are often, for the first time, opened ‘to our late happiness by the conviction of its irrevocable departure. _ We are apt to be stunned by the blow of any very great misfortune.
