    a dull aching character, and the eyeballs may be tender to pressure. Although at first there is no sign of inflamma- tion or congestion in the eyes, if the eyestrain remains unrelieved they will appear, and we observe all the symp- toms of conjunctivitis ; the patient suffers from red, irritable and watery eyes, and the papillae hypertrophy, producing granular lids, which disease reacts upon and increases the irritability of the eyes. Blepharitis and other lid troubles follow in the train, and the optic disc has been seen congested and even swollen. Harper relates three cases of severe conjunctival and corneal inflammation due to strain caused by hyperopic astigmatism, all cured by correcting glasses.^ Lippincott records two cases of muscular asthenopia, in which there was a sharply defined redness, resembling episcleritis, over the insertion of the internal recti muscles.^ Pain.—When this is the result of eyestrain it is of the non-inflammatory kind (unless the symptoms have passed on to actual inflammation, such as conjunctivitis), and is always brought on or exaggerated by the use of the eyes. It may be located in and entirely limited to the eyes themselves, or more generally, it may spread to the neigh- bouring parts, or it may originate in the head as a head- ache. Oculap Pain.—Pain is almost too strong a word to use for the discomfort produced by strain in the eyes; it is more a feeling of tension or fatigue. Nevertheless, the eyes may ache considerably and be very tender to pressure, and ac- cording to V.
