    We had no complaints of ill-treatment or rough usage except such as were of a manifestly insane character. The staff of Attendants and Nurses is in the proportion of about 1 to 13 Patients. The wages of the men begin at £'30, and advance to £50, with an addition of £10 a year when placed in chief charge of a Ward. The women commence at £18 10s., and advance to £25, with £5 extra when in charge of a Ward. The Night Attendants, who are still 6 on the male and 7 on the female side, receive a somewhat higher rate of pay. There are as heretofore, two Head Day Attendants of each sex, and one officer of the same rank in each division for the supervision of the Night Attendants. We were present in the Dining Halls on both days of our visit, and saw every reason to be satisfied with the food and the manner of serving. It consisted yesterday of meat pies and rice, and to day of boiled cod fish with potatoes. Bread and beer was given on both days. In the two Halls there were 330 men and 380 women, being the usual average and as many as those rooms will accommodate.
