![MATERNITY AND CHILO WELFARE Thore is no Maternity Hospital in this district, but tha Corporation has an arrangement with tho Lancashire County Council whoro- by tho majority of tho maternity cases in this area are admitted to Park Hospital, Davyhulmo. Othor Hospitals to which Borough patients can bo admittod aro the St. Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, Eccles and Patricroft Hospital, and Hopo Hospital, Salford. Cases of Puerperal Fever and Puerperal Pyrexia are admitted to Astley Sanatorium. In the cases of mothers confined at home who are n need of domestic assistance, the Corporation provide a scheme whereby the mother can have a Home Help for a period of ten days. There were three Home Helps on the Register at the end of the year, and the number of instances in which a Home Help was provided during the year was 25. Par¬ ticulars of the duties of a Home Help will be found in Appendix I of this report. Arrangements arc also in existence whereby a medical practitioner can call out tho Emergency Maternity Unit of the St. Mary's Hospital in the evont of such assistance being required. This Unit was called out on two occasions during 194-6. Tables V to X give details of the various clinics and their work during the year. The Consultant's Ante-natal Clinic held at Beechfield, Folly Lane, was transferred to Victoria House, Swinton during the year, in order that the Clinic, which serves the whole of tho Borough, bo situate more centrally. Attendances at tho clinics have increased during the year, tho total attendances at Welfare Centros being 11,703, as compared with 11,494 during ]945• Work in connection with tho supervision of illeg¬ itimate children is carried out by the Health Visitors in accordance with the Lancashire County Council Scheme, in which this Authority participates. Appendix 2 gives full details of this scheme. DAY NURSERIES The West Dene and Walshaw Meadow Day Nurseries ceased to be War-time Nurseries in 1946, and the Corporation decided to maintain West Dene, the larger of the two Nurseries, as a Day Nursery and discon¬ tinue the use of Walshaw Meadow.
