Tour Worship, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the honour to present the Annual Report on the communal health and sanitary conditions of the County Borough of Tynemouth for the year 1958. Comprehensive statistical information relating to various aspects of public health are presented in the body of the report. There are, however, certain features relating to Autal statistics to which I would draw 3/our attention. The Birth Rate for the year under review (17.96 per 1,000 of the population) is slightly less than that for 1957, but is still in excess of the national average figure (16.4). The Death Rate (12.11) revealed a slight increase over the figure for the previous year and still remains rather higher than the national average figure (11.7). The Death Rate of infants under the age of one year was 32.41 per thousand live births, the corresponding rate for 1957 having been 27.42. It is disappointing to record an increase in this rate, especially in the light of the emphasis which is now being placed on assiduous ante-natal care and the considerable efforts which are being made to effect a reduction. It is, however, not a cause for undue concern, for statistics relating to a population figure of the order of that of Tyne¬ mouth are not immune from fallacy. The number of deaths, resulting from cancer was the same as for the preceding year. It is significant, however, that there was a relative increase (20%) in the number of deaths of males as a result of lung cancer- There having been appreciable outbreaks of measles and whooping
