![SUMMARY. Bearing in nriat^ fact that 1012 was Ibe third full year of war, and remindful of the and strains B; which the inhabitants of this town have been su1..jectedl, we can regard the health of the people and the sanitary conditions .ts iuiving Ijeen ext'eptionally good under the circum- stances. The total nu:r.b'‘'’ f births in the year was the highest since 1023. The number of cle.r v;;is ilie lowest ever registered with the exceptif)n of tlie record low nssnber for the town registered in 1926. Infantile mortac^t}' was low, and at the end of the year more than half the Bury school clri.e;ben hod been immunised against di]')htheria. Deaths from infectious dis-a .s>.‘S, apart from those due to jmeumonia, constituted the lowest numljcr r^'er recorded. The lowest nr.c-.b<-r> of cases and of deaths from pulmonary tuber- culosis in the boro',--.g‘]’s history were notified. Welfare Clinir-'; were well attended, and the ^Municipal iVIidwives attended more cases' in one year than they have ever attended before. Many visits to cas^^s- were made 'in trying circumstances owing, to the bla('k-out. The S:-;o 'utry Ins]>ec-iors carried our their duties with tact, jvitience and undmvi wished zeal despite the many and sometimes irritating war-time enforceTnfif.!is a.ifecting nearly all the matters they had to deal with. STAFF. It was at times diilicult to keej) the whole organisation of the Public* Health Departmetsv running smocjthly and without a hitch, since there were so many ch^<n5';''t^ in the staff. At ]rresent the.-' are two whole-time Assi.^taiit iMedical Officers and three whole-time c‘' ''hs of the Health Dei^ariment in the Forces. During tlie vear the temjoot-'ty staff despite changes, often at short notice, carried ()ur 'the work in tbo de]>artment very well. The death of .'viderman Hartley during the year was a big blotv to the Committee. H was the Chairman of the Public Health Committee fimn November, 19'Fo until his death on the -Ith October, 1942. Kver active in promoting the welhire of the town, he gave unstint- inglv of his time m 'ohe cause of Public Health. He was an able and wise councillor, and hi- -:‘-j]se of public duty was ])re-eminent. His loss cvas greatly deplored tlnou.ghout the town. 1 wish to gdve my l>est thanks to you, ladies and gentlemen, for the suitport you have given me during the year. I am grateful for the help 1 received from general practitioners, who have, as alwav'-., evorked in harmony with me and--given me unfailing assistance despite tla-ir depleted numbers and overwork. 'To all officials and to the meml>ers of my staff, I am sincerely grateful for their ready • ow,],t-raiion and willing help they have afforded during the vear which has rltown so many very satisfactemy results in the Public Health field.
