    CLERICAL STAFF. 15. The following members of my clerical staff have been absent from duty during the quarter on account of sickness :—- G. Duff, from 13th November. Miss D. S. Oates, from 9th to 18th November, inclusive. Miss E. Mather, from 19th to 24:th November, inclusive. Miss G. I. Askew, from 23rd November to 16th December, inclusive. In view of the sick leave, with salary, granted to G. Duff during 1934, the Committee may desire to consider what additional leave, with salary, shall be paid to this officer, who will be absent for six months. I recommend that the other three officers be granted sick leave with salary in accordance with the county arrangement, less National Health Insurance Benefit. MILK AND DAIRIES (CONSOLIDATION) ACT, 1915. 16. Return of milk samples submitted by inspectors of weights and measures for bacteriological examination during the quarter ended 31st December, 1934 :— Number in which Total number of tubercle bacilh were Number free from *Number for which samples submitted. found. tubercle bacilli. report not yet received. 90 2 58 30 * All the 51 samples outstanding at the end of last quarter were reported to be free from tubercle bacilli. DISEASES OF ANIMALS. TUBERCULOSIS ORDER, 1925. 17. During the past quarter tuberculous disease was reported on 119 premises, and on inspection disease was found by the veterinary inspectors to exist on 80 of these premises. The total number of animals exanuned by the veterinary inspectors was 2,523, and of these 26 were reported to be suffering from tuberculosis of the udder ; 4 suffering from tuberculous emaciation, and 53 as having chronic cough and showing definite clinical signs of tuberculosis. The total number of animals slaughtered on accoimt of tuberculosis was 83, and it was found on post-mortem examination that 29 had tuberculosis of the udder, 4 tuberculous emaciation, and 50 proved to be otherwise affected with tuberculosis. Of the total animals inspected, 1,692 were cows in milk ; of these 104 were reported as diseased, and the presence of disease was confirmed in 67 cases by post-mortem examination. During the three months 14 samples of milk were examined for tubercle bacilli, 4 of which were found to be positive. MILK AND DAIRIES ORDER, 1926. 18. During the quarter the veterinary officers visited 912 farms and examined 9,956 animals in the course of their routine work under the above Order, as a result of which 25 animals were found to be suffering from tuberculosis, and were accordingly slaughtered. Of these slaughtered animals 21 were cows in milk. On post-mortem examination tuberculosis of the udder was found to exist in 17 cases, the remainder being otherwise affected with tuberculosis. These 25 animals are included in the total number shown as having been slaughtered under the Tuberculosis Order. TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS. 19. I have received the following report from the Central Tuberculosis Medical Officer, and on page 96 will be found a tabulated statement with reference to cases of tuberculosis dealt with during the past quarter :—
