![MARKET DRAYTON. ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL OFFICER OF HEALTH.. April, 1897. To the Rural District Council of Drayton. Gentlemen,—My duties as Med cal Officer of Health to tlio Rural District CouncU of Drayton com¬ menced in July, 1896. I have therefore, in confor¬ mity w.th the regulations of the Local Government Board in London, to present to you a report for the second half of the year only. I have the satisfac¬ tion, in this my first report to your Council, of bedng able to remark an exceptionally healthy state of your district. The deaths registered durirg the six months numbered only 70, being at the rate of 11.74 per 1000 persons living; whe eas the com¬ parative rate for the year 1895 was 16.94 per 1000. From zymotic diseases there were but two deaths du.ing the half-year. The number of births regis¬ tered for the six months was 194—a rate of 32.5 per 1C00 Thirteen infants (under one year of age) died during the same period, or a death rate of 67.01 per 1009 births. Under the “ Notification of Infec¬ tious Diseases Act ” 21 cases of infectious disease were notified to me during the six months. In October two sporadic cases of small pox—one case of a most virulent type—occurred in your dist.ict. By the adoption of stringent measures of isolation and disinfection, at considerable cost to the rate¬ payers, the disease was happily prevented from spreading. This leads me to suggest as a subject for your consideration in the near future, that a cottago or some suitable building be acquired, to be used when necessary, as an isrlation hospital for infectious diseases. Dur.ng the past half-year, I have tested 15 samples of pump well water, and found four of them to he unsafe for drinking purposes. I append the summary of the work of ycur vigi¬ lant sanitary inspector (Mr. G. A. Craig) for the year 1896.—I am. Yours faithfully, A, MACQUEEN, MX'. Market Drayton, 6th April, 1897. Dear Sir,— SUMMARY OF INSPECTOR'S WORK FOR 1896. Perhaps you will note the following matters at the end of your remarks cn my work, viz. (1) House drainage: the number of inspections under heading No proper dxains.” The reason for not serving nttices was (and is) that the District Council is abcut to construct sewers past the houses which are not now properly rained, and as soon as that is dene the cases will bo reported and no dcubt Nctices to provide drains connected with sewers ” will be served The slops and waste water are in the meantime disposed of on gardens, and nuisances kept down as well as possible. (2) Canal Boats: In the cases where infringements of the Acts and Or- uers of the Local Government Board were found (on 16 boats) the owners of the boats were written to and requested to remedy the defects. This course vas taken in accordance with the desires of Mr. Rrydone, H.M. chief inspector under Canal Boats Acts. Owing to certain owners having become very careless of late, and having neglected to keep their boats in proper condition, Mr. Brydone on his last visit in Nov., 1896, recommended that in cases of neglect to comply with the requirements of the Acts, etc., legal proceedings be taken. The above Council has therefore empowered me to take such proceedings where and when necessary without re¬ ference to the Council before doing so.—I am, dear sir. Your obedient servant, G. A. CRAIG.
