![still some who make a great many goods by hand. These require more labor and more care in making, but the competition keeps ihem to about the same price, and therefore there is no advantage, except for variety and the credit which arises from their skilful manip- ulation ; for there are certain latent properties in boiled sugars (when pulled, for instance) which are only brought out when made by hand, and by a clever workman. This is illustrated in a striking manner by the “Rock varieties,” as they are termed; also the beauti- ful variety of rocks and sticks, both striped and plain, made by some in the trade. No amount' of written instruction can perfect the reader in hand-made goods—nothing but pr.ac- tice, and a good deal of it, can do that—but a few ]>ractical remarks may assist him.
