![1] The Annual Patients’ Fancy Dress Dance was held on the 7th January, 1944, the Staff Concert to the patients on the 18th January, 1944, and the Nativity Play on December 26th and 27th, 1943. The latter was under the stage-managership and direction of Mr. K. C. Packham, Chief Male Nurse, assisted by Sister Brown and Staff Nurse Hunter. During the year electro-convulsion therapy was Treatment, given to 51 patients—26 males and 25 females, and the following show the results :— 241 treatments were given to the 25 female cases, 7 were discharged recovered, 6 improved sufficiently to be discharged, 3 improved but are still in hospital, 7 showed no improvement, and 2 are still under treat- ment. 578 treatments were given to the 26 male cases, 2 were discharged recovered, 4 improved sufficiently to be discharged, 10 improved but are still in hospital, and 10 showed no improvement. As in most hospitals, cases of involutional melan- cholia were the most promising. With cases of schizophrenia, no advantages were found over ordinary psycho-therapeutic measures. The operation of pre-frontal leucotomy was carried out on one male patient by Mr. Harvey Jackson on the 9th November, 1943. After an initial improve- ment mentally this patient, Mr. T. E. R. developed prostatic trouble and died on the 8th January, 1944. One case of general paralysis was treated by malaria during the past year The epanutin treatment of epilepsy, prolonged narcosis, and psycho-therapy were carried out where indicated. Dr. R.
