    7. A slight increase was recorded in the number of cases of diphtheria notified, 644 cases being notified during the past quarter compared with 632 in the preceding quarter. The figure for the past quarter, however, compares favourably with that for the first quarter of this year when 1,144 cases were notified. The deaths registered from this disease during the quarter numbered 43 compared with 45 in the previous quarter. 8. An increase was recorded in the number of notifications of cases of enteric fever during the past quarter, the number of cases reported being 72 compared with 24 in the precedmg quarter. Cases were reported from nineteen sanitary districts in the county, the district with the highest number of cases being the Lanchester Rural District where 16 cases occurred. Every effort has been made to prevent the spread of infection. Four deaths were registered from this disease during the quarter compared with 3 in the previous quarter. 9. There were 5 notifications of puerperal fever and 21 notifications of puerperal pyrexia com- pared with 10 and 45 respectively in the previous quarter. During the quarter 14 cases were admitted to hospitals under the County Sr herae and the services of consultants were requisitioned in 7 cases. 10. The number of notifications of ophthalmia neonatorum received during the quarter was 26 compared with 35 in the previous quarter. In-patient hospital treatment under the County Scheme was provided in respect of 5 cases. 11. The number of deaths registered from measles during the quarter was 9 compared with 7 in the previous quarter ; while the deaths from whooping cough numbered 12 compared with 8. Diarrhoea and enteritis under two years of age was responsible for 43 deaths during the quarter com- pared with 25 in the previous quarter. CLERICAL STAFF. 12. The following members of the clerical staff have been absent from duty on account of sick- ness :— Miss M. E. Cherry, from 16th July to 5th August, inclusive. Miss C. M. C. Overton, from 16th to 20th July, inclusive. Miss M. A. W. Golightly, from 15th to 27th August, inclusive, and I recommend that sick leave with salary be granted in accordance with the county arrangement, less National Health Insurance Benefit. G. Duff, returned to duty from special sick leave 1st July. VACCINATION. 13. Public Vaccinator. No. 49 (Byers Green) District.—I have received the resignation, as from the 30th September, 1935, of Dr. S. D. Jouhar of the HaU, Byers Green, Pubhc Vaccinator for this District, which comprises the parishes of Byers Green, Newdield and Old Park. I have appointed as his successor, in a temporary capacity only, subject to your confirmation and the approval of the Minister of Health, Dr. A. C. Farquharson of Ugie House, Spennymoor, as from 1st October, 1935, on the same scale of fees as apphed to Dr. Jouhar, i.e. :— Births ... 1/- *Subsequent Cases.
