BEFORE entering on thefe, it may be proper, through this medium, to give notice, that, from the immenfe number of Cafes communicated to him lince the publicatioa of his laft work, in February, iSco, the Patentee has felefted a few hundreds for the pub* Ijc eye.—Thefe he has committed to the prefs, and fpeedily intends publifhing, and forming therewith an entire new work, entitled, “ A few Hundred Cafes of fuccefsful Prac- t( tice with Perkins’s Patent Metallic. Traftors, during the year 1800 (fold, price is. by}. Johnfon, St. Paul’s Church-yard; J. Wright, Piccadilly ; and all other Bookfellers.) The purchafers, as well as the prefent poflelfors of the Tnfolors, are invitt'd to.apply and receive this work gratis ; either of B. D. Perkins, the Patentee in Leicefter- Square, or of Frederick Smith, Chernift and Drug-gift, in the Haymarket. While the Patentee has to ex prefs his acknowledgments to thofe individually who have favored him with their communications, he has to folicit in a particular manner the in* diligence of others vfhofe Cafes, contrary to the wifltes of the writers, will of neceftity not find a place in that work. No other apology, he trufts, will be thought neceftary than merely the ftatement, that, to publifti the whole he has received, would have required a moderate Folio Volume 1 Againft his former Publications it has been complained, that either they were fo bulky as to be unreafonably expenfive, or, (with a view of comprifing much matter in a little compafs), fo fmall a letter had been employed, as to render the printing hardly legible to that refpectable clafs of readers whole fight, by reafon of ad¬ vanced years, mull have become in fome degree iruperfefL With the work now in the few re fs, it will be in view to obviate both of thefe objections. The Patentee believes alfo, that there will not be a want of concurrence with him in the propriety of limiting the adnnftion of thofe favors into his Book which were father severe, however juft, in their animadverlions on the difgraceful conduct of certain charac¬ ters, who have fo Cealoully entered tlie lift in oppofition to this Difcovery ; and efpecially fuel) as have had recourle to the masked mode of attack which fome venal Reviews and other journals ever offer, for a trifling gratuity, to adventurers of that defcription. How- « ever imperfedl may have been an exterior Ihew of contrition, there exifts abundant reafon for the fuppofition, that from the refult of their attempts, this has been felt in more than one inftance among the offenders. Forbearance, on moft Occafions, is highly com¬ mendable ; and the Patentee trufts, that that honorable fpirit among his correfpondents which called forth their exertions in the detection of fraud and injuftice, will derive equal intereft in extending the hand of forgivenefs,where fuchliberality becomes alike honorable. In the feleCtion of Cases, alfo, he has aimed to prefent them from different parts *of Great Britain ; fo that moft enquirers may meet with the names of vouchers in or near their own diftrift, which mull: be more fatisfaCtory. * As communications from his American Correfpondents mull be lefs interefting to the inhabitants of this kingdom, to whom his Book will be efpecially addreffed, the Patentee intends adducing but one from that fide of the Atlantic : this, coming from a genleman, vvhofe high reputation as a medical character is not unknown to many in this country, fhall, though in an abbreviated Irate, be cited here ; after which, ftiall be introduced abftraCls of as many others as the prefent prefcribed limits will admit. Perkins, of Leicester-Squarei London, communicates.as follows: Dear Sir, September 14th, 1800. I am the more immediately induced to write to you at this mom'ent, as I have juft been reading an abftraft of a Pamphlet, (in the New York Spectator), publilhed in England by Dr. Haygarth, “ on Imagination and fictitious Tractors.” 1 have ndt time to give you my opinion on the motives and dilingenuous meafures taken to render dilVeputable a Practice and Principle already eftablilhed by the learned. To deny the influence of the Tractors on the bodies of animals is as futile and abfurd as to deny the emetic properties of tartarized antimony, or the fedative properties of opium.—A difcovery of my own,' long fin.ce, removed every doubt, as it relpedts their action independant of imaginatiion ; and which was to me a Jfufficient proof that they aft on the Galvame influence of our bodies.
