    The ingenious and celebrated Dr. Macbride, and after him, our moft eminent phyficians, che.- mifts, furgeons, and experimental philofophers, are perfe&ly agreed, that whatever be the peculiar nature of this malignant difeafe, the frequent ufe of vegetables is the moft certain and efficacious means hitherto difcovered, both for its pre¬ vention and cure. It has alfo been fully proved by abundant experience in the royal navy, Sec. that freffi Wort is a liquor fimilar to the recent juices of fweet vegetables, and is equally effe&ual, being mild, faponaceous, and of an ape¬ rient nature; that, when mixed with the animal juices, it will readily ferment, and is capable of producing a fufficient quantity of the antifeptic vapour, the only proper agent for reftoring found- nefs and vigour to the whole fyftem. The following quotations are made from Dr. Macbride’s Effays, firft publifhed in 1767. After a feries of experiments and juft reafonings on the refpe&ive powers of antifeptics, he concludes thus, page 160,—“ What proves almoft to a demonftra- tion the antifeptic power of the fermentable fub- ftances, is the cure of the Sea-Scurvy. This difeafe, wherein the whole mafs of fluids is difl lolved and corrupted, cannot be cured by any other means than by throwing in a large quantity of New Air, and this muft be done in the wav of j diet; it muft be furnifhed from things, that can be taken
