    Causes of Death. Inquests. of those who died were persons of 70 and upwards, none having attained the age of 80. MEAN ANNUAL MORTALITY. MALES. FEMALES. BOTH SEXES. For the year 1871 ... 15* 11*8 12*9 For 20.85years—1851-71* 14.8 9*7 11*7 Among the causes of death, Diseases of the Brain were, as during last year, especially prominent. Altogether 27 or well-nigh half, were attributable to this class, viz., 8 to Apoplexy, 9 to ordinary forms of Paralysis, 2 to General Paresis, 7 to Epilepsy, and 6 to other forms of Cerebral Disease. Pul- j monary Consumption, many cases of which were obscure or even latent, proved fatal to as many as 12 persons. The only deaths in the zymotic J class, were- one case of Erysipelas, and one of Dy-1; sentery. I 0 One death was the subject of investigation by the Coroner. The case was that of a poor idiot, aged 20, an inmate of nearly eight years standing^ His childish and disorderly habits rendered him anffl object of dislike to one of the other patients, whcj one day before breakfast, when the attendant’s backp was turned, attacked him with much violence. Th(3 injuries appeared disproportionate to the sad result the autopsy showing that death had resulted fromjl <c shock and injury to the brain and Spinal Cord,’®, and not from any traumatic mischief.
