![numerous, that in 1790 it was considered necessary to enlarge the building; and two wings were added to it.—This beneficial establishment is supported by voluntary subscription, and once in three years a musical festival takes place, from which source it derives an unprecedented emolument. At the festival celebrated in 1817, the gross receipts, during the three days' performance, amounted to the sum of SllGl. 6s. 9d. and the treasurers of the Hospital re- ceived from the managers the sum of 429G/. 10s. lOd, there not being an instance upon record of any insti- tution receiving so much benefit, or such extensive patronage, from a similar source. The periodical festivals from whence the Hospital derives such an astonishing revenue, have, since the year 1799, been arranged and principally directed by Mr. Joseph Moore ; who, from his extensive musical knowledge, and indefatigable exertions for the benefit of this institution, has been the means of assembling together the principal vocal and instrumental per- formers in greater numbers than any other place in this king(]om can boast. On these occasions the eombinalion of professional excellence, producing, as it were, an harmonious rivalry, calls forth the con- cord of sweet sounds, in a degree of perfection not to be heard in any other performances whatever.
