    PEEFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION. In preparing this edition, I have continued to aim at pre- senting, within a moderate compass, such an account of the symptoms and treatment of diseases of the nose and pharynx, as might be useful to the practitioner and senior student. The favourable reception accorded to the two previous editions makes me believe that I have to a great extent succeeded in my aim, and induces me to adhere, as closely as possible, to the original plan of the work. I have, therefore, as in previous editions, prefaced the work with an account of the anatomy and physiology of the nose and pharynx. It has sometimes been suggested that these sections on anatomy and physiology are quite superfluous, as the student or practitioner must be supposed to be already sufBciently familiar with these subjects; and, in any case, he has only to refer to the ordinary text-books for information. Now, it is quite true that a good deal of the anatomy of the nose and pharynx is already sufficiently well known, or can be easily got at in the ordinary text-books. On the other hand, there are many anatomical points of great practical importance,' which are very little known, except by those who have specially studied these regions; and there are some, too, which are insufficiently, and sometimes inaccurately, dealt with in the ordinary anatomical text-books. And, moreover, the anatomy of these regions is scattered about in anatomical books, under various headings, and therefore not very readily referred to.
