    Most of the plants compi-ehended in the following enumeration, are produced within ten miles of Edin- burgh, all of them within twenty; and, with the exception of such as are included in parentheses, have been found and examined by myself. With regard to the size of the volume, :as-the end, for which it is designed, requires that it be portable, it is accordingly small; and, perhaps, might form no unsuitable appendix to Smith's Compendium Flora Britannicce. I regret that I could not avail myself of the im» provements, exhibited in Sir James Smith's English Flora; as. the sheets of this book were in the printer's hands, before I had an opportunity of seeing it. I cannot conclude without acknowledging my ob- ligations to Dr. Graham, for the encouragement and assistance, with which he has favoured me; and, at the same time, I hold myself indebted, in some measure, to the publications, to which I have already referred. Whatever, may be the defects of this trifling' compilation, I hope I may be allowed to claim that indulgence, which is always conceded to good
