Confidering the Hate and variation in hofpitals, 1 leave it as the ftudent’s bufinefs to enquire where is the moll extenfive hofpital, attended by the bell practical fur- geon, and confider whether his fortune will allow him to go and learn under him. He wTho intends to prac- life phyfic, will not meet with the fame difficulty ; for if we compare the ftate of the firft practical furgeons with, that of phyficians, we fhall certainly find that the laft are fifty to one. Before 1 draw a parallel of the ftate of phyfic and furgery between France and Great Britain, in indicating where arq the moft numerous and beft at- tended hofpitals for proper inftrudtion, it will not be un- acceptable to my readers, to take a view of the method of ftudying it in France. In Paris, the metropolis of France, there are two colleges, one for the ftudy of Phyfic, and the other for that of Surgery. All the members of the Royal College of Phyficians take the title of Profefiors, becaufe each in turn delivers lectures in Latin on Anatomy, Phyfiolo- x. gy, Hygiena, and Therapeutics, feparately, and without fee. The members of the Royal College of Surgery are all members of the Royal Academy of Surgery, but thefe do not deliver lectures by turns, as the Phyficians do in their college. The King appoints permanent Pro- feflors on Ofteology, Sarcology, Phyfiology, Hygiena, Therapeutics, Operations, Midwifery, and Difeafes of the Eye, who deliver^feparately their ledtures in French, at the theatres of the Surgery School, free of all expen- ces. Thefe Profefiors take the title of Royal, becaufe the King allows each of them a falary.
