BY DAY, in this country alone, FIRE causes the loss of EIGHT LIVES. Every month, the cost of Fire Damage is more than TWO MILLION POUNDS. Moreover, fire puts workers out of employment ! THIS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAPPEN— —and WOULD NOT—if effective means were available to subdue the fire AT THE OUTSET, during those first vital moments when it can be prevented from spreading. The fire illustrated on the front cover broke out during business hours in a large store. A passer-by noticed a glow through a third storey window and immediately told an assistant. The alarm was sounded, but although the Fire Service was on the scene in a few moments the third and fourth floors were by that time blazing furiously, and despite the firemen’s efforts, the entire building \was burnt out. The firemen’s task was rendered more difficult because of the need for isolating the outbreak to prevent its involving adjoining premises. The locality of the fire in a busy main street suspended all traffic just at the evening rush hour.
