Documents are contained in 1 file and consist of papers, notes and correspondence belonging to James Mason: included is a note of his revised duties at the Retreat; papers on York Temperance Society; papers relating to the Society of Friends; and letters sent to him. Much of this is personal in nature rather than about his duties at the Retreat, although there is a little on the latter topic. Mason was engaged in 1839 to take charge of patients employed in outdoor labour. He was a Quaker, and involved in the temperance movement. He served the Retreat for 37 years, his duties being lightened  in his old age.
