System is ex- cellent in its proper place; but the bare facts must be approached first; the learner must be immersed in them to begin with, in a real practical way, without rules and conventions. Noth- ing but practice will make a subject familiar; and during the practice a “rule” here and there,—that is a con- venient summing up of the results of experience,—may be thrown in; if possible at a moment when it will be welcomed and assimilated.
