What you’ll do

Join Claudia Hammond and guests in a conversation about allergies. They will discuss the different types of allergies – from food to bee-stings, and examine whether or not allergies are still on the increase.

Claudia will be In conversation with a line-up of international doctors and researchers, who will also consider some exciting new diagnostic tools and treatments on the horizon. The audience will have the chance to ask questions afterwards. You can participate or just listen in. 

The event will be recorded live with an audience and edited into a programme to be broadcast on the BBC World Service as part of ‘The Evidence’ series. After broadcast, episodes of ’The Evidence’ will be available on the BBC website.

Location

We’ll be in the Reading Room on level 2. You can walk up the spiral staircase to the Reading Room door, or take the lift up and then head left from the Library Desk.

Place not guaranteed

Booking a ticket for a free event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

Claudia Hammond

Presenter

Claudia Hammond is an award-winning broadcaster, writer and psychology lecturer. She is the presenter of ‘All in the Mind’ and ‘Mind Changers’ on BBC Radio 4, and ‘The Evidence’ and ‘Health Check’ on the BBC World Service.

Carsten Flohr

Speaker

Carsten Flohr is Professor of Dermatology at St John’s Institute of Dermatology at King’s College London and also a Consultant Dermatologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He has a particular interest in eczema and allergies.

Sejal Saglani

Speaker

Professor Sejal Saglani leads the Paediatric Severe Asthma Group in the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial College London. She is Director of the Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health at Imperial College London. She is Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital and part of the Paediatric Difficult Asthma Team.

Paul Turner

Speaker

Dr Paul Turner is a Reader in Paediatric Allergy and Immunology at Imperial College London. His research focuses on the pathophysiology of severe allergic reactions to food, and how this impacts upon risk management and allergen labelling.

Alexandra Santos

Speaker

Professor Alexandra Santos is Full Professor of Paediatric Allergy at King’s College London and Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. The Santos Lab aims to improve the accuracy and safety of food-allergy diagnosis and our understanding of the mechanisms of food allergy and oral tolerance in IgE-sensitised children in order to identify new targets for definitive treatment of food allergy.
