Discovering our Collections through Manuscripts

What you’ll do

Join Odalys and Beth from our library team for an interactive workshop about how to discover and use historical manuscripts in our collections. Manuscripts are hand-written or typed texts, that have not been professionally printed or published.  

In this hour-long session, you will:

  • receive a general introduction to manuscripts
  • look at items from the collection
  • create your own manuscript using materials provided.

You’ll also learn about the practical aspects of using our collections, including how to find and order items using the online catalogue.  

The workshop is open to all levels and backgrounds, but will be especially suited to those who are new to Wellcome Collection and/or at the beginning of their research journey. 

Unique and vulnerable items will be on display at the workshop, so please leave pens, coats, bags and other personal belongings in the cloakroom on the ground floor. You may bring laptops, notebooks and pencils to take notes.

Need to know

Location

We’ll be in the Viewing Room. It’s next to the Library entrance on level 2, which you can reach by taking the lift or the stairs.

Place not guaranteed

Booking a ticket for a free, in-person event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

Waiting list

If this event is fully booked, you may still be able to attend. We will operate a waiting list, which opens 30 minutes before this event starts. Arrive early, and we’ll give you a numbered ticket. If there are any unfilled places just before the start time, we will invite you to enter in order of ticket number.
