What you’ll do

Hear from five writers as they uncover some of their deepest secrets in this evening hosted by Bidisha. Anna Blundy, Deanna Fei, Courttia Newland, Hannah Partos and Rupert Thomson will read personal essays on birth, procreation, sexuality and death. These recently published stories respond to newly digitised objects at Wellcome Collection. Read the stories in full here.

We’ll be in the Reading Room on level 2. You can walk up the spiral staircase to the Reading Room door, or take the lift up and then head left from the Library Desk.

Place not guaranteed

Booking a ticket for a free event does not guarantee you a place. You should aim to arrive 15 minutes before the event is scheduled to start to claim your place. If you do not arrive on time, your place may be given to someone on the waiting list.

Courttia Newland

Courttia Newland’s short stories have featured in many anthologies, and he has been on the shortlist for the Crime Writers’ Association Dagger in the Library Award. His most recent books include the novel ‘The Gospel According to Cane’ (2013) and ‘Writing Short Stories’ (2014, with Tania Hershman).

Deanna Fei

Deanna Fei is author of ‘Girl in Glass: Dispatches From the Edge of Life’ (2015), about Mila’s journey from prematurity to health, and ‘A Thread of Sky’ (2010); her writing has appeared in the New York Times, TIME and Fortune, among others. She also works with non-profit organisations to raise awareness of the true tolls of prematurity.

Hannah Partos

Hannah Partos is a writer whose work has been published in the Guardian, the Times and the Mail on Sunday, among others. She often works with Anthony Nolan, the UK’s stem cell register and blood cancer charity. In 2016, she won Anthony Nolan’s Journalist of the Year award.

Rupert Thomson

Speaker

British writer Rupert Thomson is the author of 11 novels and a memoir, ‘This Party’s Got to Stop’, which won the Writers’ Guild Non-Fiction Book of the Year in 2010. His most recent novel is ‘Never Anyone But You’, based on the real-life relationship and creative collaboration between artists Marcel Moore and Claude Cahun.

Anna Blundy

Anna Blundy is a journalist and novelist who retrained as a psychotherapist and founded The Mind Field. Her books include five thrillers featuring Faith Zanetti, a war correspondent.
