The Coming of Age

Stop 9/12: William Utermohlen’s self portraits

Back to list of stops

This artist is named William Utermohlen.

He painted portraits throughout his career, including of himself. Check out the 1977 painting.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1995. He carried on painting and you can see how much his style changed in just five years.

This happened because as his Alzheimer’s progressed, his perception and spatial sense changed.

Utermohlen and his wife Patricia worked with his neurologists to write an academic paper about making art while living with dementia.
