The following is an interim description which may change when detailed cataloguing takes place in future:

Professional archive covering Malcolm Pines' work in the area of psychotherapy and group analysis from the 1960s to 2010s. Includes correspondence, handwritten notes, drafts, essays, reviews, treatment reports and conference materials. There are files relating to specific disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, manic depression, borderline personality and appetite disorders. There are files relating to themes such as agency, borderline concept, economy/evolution, empathy, guilt and shame, self analysis, psychosis, trauma and the history of psychoanalysis. There are files relating to figures in the group analysis field such as SH Foulkes, Wilfred Bion, Patrick de Mare, Nicola Diamond and Max Jones as well as to the Cassel Hospital. There is material relating to training, including his teaching at LSE and the IGA (Institute of Group Analysis) qualifying course. Also includes papers relating to the Association of Therapeutic Communities (ATC), including conference papers, articles and papers, including papers relating to Fulbourn Hospital and Ingrebourne Centre, and other papers concerning therapeutic communities.

The bulk of the collection (accession 2287) was transferred to Wellcome Collection by Malcolm Pines in June 2016. Subsequent accrual (acc 2834) was received via Mulberry Bush Third Space (MB3), prior to the archive service's closure. This collection was originally acquired by the Planned Environment Therapy Trust Archive and Study Centre between 1998 and 2002. Ownership transferred by the Planned Environment Therapy Trust (PETT) to the Mulberry Bush Organisation at the end of December 2018, at which point it joined the Mulberry Bush Third Space (MB3) archive service.

Malcolm Pines was born in London in 1925. He qualified in medicine specialising in psychiatry. While training at the Maudsley Hospital he met S.H. Foulkes, the pioneer of group analysis, who became his training analyst. He was one of the core group of psychiatrists involved in advancing group analysis in the UK and a founding member of the Institute of Group Analysis (IGA) . He also served as the President of the International Association of Group Psychotherapy and Group Processes (IAGP) from 1980 to 1984.

This collection is currently uncatalogued and cannot be ordered online. Due to ongoing work to improve our collections management systems we are unable to facilitate access to uncatalogued material until 2027.
