    and other circumstances, therefore, which might be mentioned, I have been induced to consider chemical remedies as palliatives only, and to ex- plain their acknowledged good effects even in this way, rather upon their general than their chemical operation; but this opinion, as well as the others advanced above, I submit to the medical world with the greatest deference.
