PUBLIC HEALTH DEPARTI^NT. iO His Worship the ^]ayor and ^feInbers of the Council of the City of Pietermaritzburg, Lad5-6s and Gentlemen, I have the honour to present the Annual Report on the Hea,lth and Sanitary Circumstances of the City of Pietei*maritzburg, for the ca.lendar year I960, Infectious disease figures were a little lower than last year. Tuberculosis incidence increased -in Non-Europeans, while Poliomyelitis ii:.cidence was again low. Infantile Mortality worsened 5Ln Colouxeds, but vras much lower in Natives, Death rates were a little higher in all races, Cancer deaths in Europeans being double last year’s total. Birth rates were unchanged in Europeans, but rose in all the Non- E-uropean races, 245 Council houses were built for Asiatics at Northdale, The building of a new Administration Block at the Abattoir was commenced duning the year, the Abattoir again experiencing a record year of s.laughtering. It is with deep regret that I have to record the death shortly after retiring through ill health, of Mr, G.B. Lupton, Mr, Lupton served in this department for 43 years and was Abattoir I4inager for 30 years. I wish to express my thanks to all members of the Staff for the high level of efficiency maintajLned in the Department throughout the year. In conclusion, I wish to record my appreciation of the support res-dily given to me at all times by the Ikyor, the Chairman and members 01 the Public Health Committee, and of the cordial co-operation of the various Municipal Heads of Departments, I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gentlemen, Your obedient servant.
