![[ « ] 77^ CAUSES of Opthalmy. The fame general causes, that excite in- flammation in other parts of the body, will produce an opthalmy ; but, on account of the delicacy of the ftructure of the eye, and its exposed lituation, it is liable-to be affected by fo many things which, applied to other parts, would be innoxious, that it is wonderful inflammations of the eyes are not more frequent than they are : add to which, as an organ of fense, it is ftimulated in a manner peculiar to itself, by light and colours. Every fymptom and appearance of the disease, ftiew that the impetus of the blood in the vefsels of the part is increased, and of course any thing that can bring on a ftronger and more frequent contraction of the fibres, may produce inflammation.
