Burl now obferved very diflingly a new inflammation tak ‘ing place lower down in the urethra, where 1 had felt nothing before, and where none of the injediion had touched, Thisnew -anflammation began, as itfeemed to me, at the very border of the former, extending itfelf lower down in the urethra 5 andwas followed by a copious difcharge, attended with the fame fymp= toms as before, and continued for fix days; at the end of which, all the fymptoms were greatly abated. But now, tomy furprife, — E fele diflindly the fymptoms ofa third inflammation taking place, _ extending from the border of the former about the caput gallina~ “ginis to the very neck of the bladder, and attended by an ardor “uring, and copious difcharge like the preceding. Arthis 1 was _ferioufly alarmed; for I had conflantly inje@ed the warm ollof aimondsthree times a day. I perceived thar the inflammation firft excited by the cauftic alkali was moft evidently communicated ‘from one part of the urethra to the other; whence I was afraid, that an inflammation of the whole internal furface of the bladder © might at length enfue, and be attended perhaps with dangerous | confequences. In this fituation I continued betwixt hope and fear for about feven or eight days ; when I found atlaft, to my great fatisfaGion, this inflammation gradually abate, together with . the difcharge, without pafling the limitsof the urethra; and I was perfectly freed from every fymptom of thefe three difting gouorrhceas, as 1 might call chem, at the endof the fixu week. - From this experiment upon myfelf, together with the above- mentioned obfervations, and from a very curious obfervation, fince related ina differtation publifhed by Dr. Oettingerof Tubin- gen, where a difcharge from the urethra, apparently fimilar to _ that of a virulent gonorrheea, was produced by the internal ufa” of olive oil, which had been wrung out of red Turkith yarn, on which ithad been poured before, the reader may judge, whether . ‘ acrimonious fubflances, of a different kind from the venereal yi- tus, fuch as cancerous ichor, or perhaps other ftimuliapplied to the urethra, may not fometimes procuce the fame fymproms as the cauftic didin my expériment, and the oil in Dr. Oettinger's- obfervation. 1 certainly believe, thar runnings fimilar to a go- - -norrhoea from the venereal virus, are fometimes produced from o- ther caufes, only perhaps with milder fymptoms, and of fhorter « _~ continuance; tho’ on myfelf I could not perceive any difference _ inthe colour, confiflence, or other circumflances.
