Bartram, from Pensylvania, a sod of fine silver- leaved Arum with a seed pod; it grows in mud and water; one of the oddest plants in N. America, Sowed the seeds, which were in a green berry, round the old root ; it sprang forth, but did not lower ; one seed came up, and the old plant flowered Aug. 18 ; a new species. Calycanthus floridus. | Not in Catalogue. ** In the Botanical Magazine this plant is said to have been very scarce in our gardens till 1757 ; and there are various Memoranda to shew that Mr. Collinson had then made a fresh im- portation from N. America. In one of his letters to Linnzus, dated May 12, 1756, he says, *]t is a charming Suffrutex, and grows in my garden in the open air, bearing flowers abundantly every year.' Mem.—-* In the pe 1739, Lord Petre had two fine evergreen shrubs with [bay-like leaves; the one bore white flowers, the other red ; in Aug., 1740, one of them bore a most delightful erimsonish double flower, of a Ketmia figure ; itis well designed by Kzemfer, in Am, Exotici, and named Tsubackki, Campanula americana.
