Numbers came to the gymnafise folety for bathing, and occafionally, perhaps, for frifbions. The bach was frequented for health, and as a lux- ury that they might go to fupper with a clean (kin, linen (hirts being then very feldom ufed. Galen complains, that in his time almoft ail clafies of men bathed daily; every gentleman we underhand had a private bath at his own houfe, which was furrrp- tuous and highy adorned. Seneca exclaims, that many even of the inferior ranks would not be fa- tisfied unlefs the walls of their private bath were decorated with Alexandrian marble. In the pub- lick cold bath they had room to fwim : this was a practice very general amongft the Greeks and Ro- marvs. The luxurious, effeminate, valetudinarian* and difeafed, generally repaired to the warm bath, except probably in fultry weather, when warm wa- ter could neither be fo agreeable nor refrefliing. Befides a warm aqueous bath, there was alfo a fu- datorium for vapour and dry beat to force fw'eats. At the Bai$, recommended by Celfus, a warm vapour arofe fponianeoufly from the earth, and anfwered the intention of a fudatorium.
