    [ »44 ] the barbarians of Tartary, On that revolutiott many literary men fled from Conftantinople and took refuge in Italy, bringing with them the an- cient Greek and Roman authors, which had been depofited for ages in the libraries of that city. A few of thofe precious fragments had before been carried into Italy, but in general lay buried or negle(5led i very few. made ufe of fuch books, or as yet underftood Greek. Science from this time is abolilhed in Greece, and trampled under foot by the Alcorar^ ignorance and defpotifm. Learn- ing and Arts now ebbed back to Italy, and flowed in new channels: we fliall find them extending to the weft of the Alpsi penetrating beyond the Rhine and the Danube into the frozen regions of the north, and the original feeds fown by the Greeks and Ro- mans rifing up gradually in almoft every country of Europe, enriched with improvements and new dif- coveries. A new invention in Germanyj in 1445, the art of Printing, gave new creation and wings to literature; books were purchafed at a moderate cxpence and knowledge expanded. In 1506, Diof- corides was printed : in 1525 Galen : In 1526 Hip- pocrates : in 1528 Paulus Egineta. Celfus was ■later in being known *, I do not find that he had fallen even into the hands of the Arabians. Historians are unanimous in Angling out the commencement of the fixteenth century as one of the moft remarkable and fplendid epochs in the annals of the world: the whole theatre of nature then begins by degrees to unfold to man.
