    BIRKENHEAD MATERNITY HOSPITAL. ANNUAL REPORT, 1931. t Bearing in mind the abnormal conditions which have prevailed during 1931, the results of the year’s work at the Hospital may be considered satisfactory, as will be gathered from the report now presented to you. STATISTICS.—The admissions to Hospital, 447 against 481 were less by 34 than in the previous year ; but this is probably attributable to general causes, e.g., the decline in the birth rate, which in 1931 was the lowest on record for this Country, and the economic depression. No deaths occurred during the year. The average number of patients per day was 17.73; last year’s average being 18.81 ; the average length of stay was 14.44 days. OUT-PATIENT DEPARTMENT.—On the other hand, the Out-Patient attendances have increased considerably; the ante-natal attendances were 1,410 as against 691 last year, and the babies’ attendances totalled 2,500, being 2,363 in 1930, thus showing increases of 719 and 137 respectively. Of the ante-natal total of 1,410, 395 were first visits and 1,015 re-visits, exceeding last year’s figures by 44 and 675. The Clinic which was formerly held every Tuesday, has, since October, been extended to three clinics weekly and merged into the Out-Patient Department, which has always existed, though not under that name. The value of this re¬ organisation has already been proved, as it enables the Staff, both Medical and Nursing, to gain a thorough knowledge of their cases before their actual admission into Hospital; and the Committee feel confident that it will be found of 'great assistance in the future. DISTRICT.—The cases attended on the District number 109, 3 less than in the previous year ; visits paid by midwives increased by 74 and those paid by pupils show a decrease of 97. TRAINING SCHOOL.—123 applications were received and 16 pupils entered for training ; 12 pupils have already gained the Central Midwives Board’s certificate.
