    disagreeable odour which is peculiar to it, and which is finally heightened into an intolerable stench. The discharges of blood which are noticed on the surface of cancerous ulcers of old date, proceed either from the exhalations of the fungous growths noticed above, or from the suc¬ cessive erosion of the arteries, or veins. The last is by far the most dangerous cause, and powerfully contributes to that gradual exhaustion of the patient's strength which precedes and at length determines death. The fourth stage of Cancer is less dependent on the local injuries of the disease, than on its effects upon the con¬ stitution and the general health.
