    the Asylum but not resident, who may have sustained any injury in the performance of his duties, reporting thereon from time to time to the Sub-Committee. This is not to apply to the wives and families of officers or attendants. 18. He, or one of his Assistant Medical Officers, shall be present at the celebration of Divine Worship in the Asylum on Sundays. 19. He shall personally, or by one of the Assistant Medical Officers, give directions to the attendants as to any patients who in his judgment, are unfitted to leave the wards for exercise or work, and shall also take care that when patients are out of the grounds a sufficient number of attendants have charge of them. 20. He shall give such instructions to the Assistant Medical Officers as may be necessary, with reference to the duties to be performed by them, and as to the medical and other treatment of the patients. 21. He shall present a Report to the Sub-Committee at their first meeting, immediately after the 81st March in each year, setting forth the number of admissions, removals, discharges and deaths during the year to the 31st of December preceding, and the health and general condition of the patients with such further observations as may appear to him necessary. 22. He shall have authority, in special cases of emergency or difficulty amongst patients or resident staff, to avail himself of the advice or professional assistance of an experienced surgeon or physician, reporting specially to the Sub-Committee at their next meeting, in every such case the grounds on which such assistance was considered necessary. 28. He may, if he deem it beneficial, permit the temporary Lunacy Act, absence of any patient for not exceeding four days, reporting his 1890< Sec- 276<5) action to the Sub-Committee at their next meeting. 24. No officer or servant shall be engaged without satisfactory references being first obtained, and, if previously employed, a verified reference from the last employer should (if possible) be obtained. « 25. No attendant or servant shall be engaged except on a three months’ probation, at the expiration of which they shall appear before the Sub-Committee for confirmation. 26. No promotion or reduction of any employee affecting an alteration of pay shall be made except with the Sub-Committee’s authority.
