![Introduction. It is only natural thai the first investigations into human genetics should comprise congenital deformities of the hands, such deformities being con spicuous and, therefore, easily traceable through several generations. Farabee demonstrated in 1905 that brachydactylism is due to a dominant gene, in the Mendelian sense. The following years brought similar results regarding polydactylism, syndactylism, and split-hand. Various other congenital deformities, termed here »deformities of absence« (deformities due to absence or atrophy of larger or smaller portions of the skeleton of the upper extremities) have never so far been submitted to any comprehensive collected investigation with a view to inheritance. This is probably due to the facts that the deformities are comparatively rare, that they are often difficult to classify, owing to rather great variations, and finally, that the inheritance is not evident. The object of the investigation embodied in the present work has been to examine all patients with deformities of absence in Denmark and, on the basis of experiences from these examinations, to describe and classify the deformities in uniform genetic groups, as well as to study the modes of transmission of the various deformities. In addition the work contains, for each deformity, an indication of the incidence in the population and a discussion on prognosis and aetiology. Finally the question of eugenic measures is discussed. half-siblings, e. g. 2 half-sisters with a common mother is in the sibship of the prop, indicated as: O-mo-O, and among the more distant relations as: sist-half(mo)sist.
