About this work

Description

Carta de persona fidedigna del Estado de San Luis--observaciones practicas sobre el cholera. Produced in San Luis Potos?, Mexico. Dated 31 July 1833. An unsigned report on the cholera experience of an hacienda whose simple and well-observed management of about 100 cases lost only 4 patients. The author includes a description of his own case. The main therapeutic agents were manzanilla, chalk, and laudanum administered primarily per orem in plentiful liquid, though the administration of laudanum was preferred per anum. Reference is made to the case of the local physician Pascual de Aranda [author of Receta para la colera morbus, San Luis Potos? [1833]] who recovered from cholera but lost his reason, supposedly from heavy doses of laudanum administered simultaneously by mouth and by clyster. Having described other successful remedies the writer concludes that there is no single method of treatment suitable for all climates and all patients.
