genotypes which are distinguishable phenotypically (rj and r + often) is made from ordinary stock lysates diluted through buffer to about 10^ particles. 0.01 ml. is applied ina very narrow line. At the end of four hours, the material (about 12 cm. in total length) is cut into 0.5 cm. pieces which are dropped into tubes containing 1.0 ml. acetate buffer pH 5.2,0.01 K. (This is an ex cellent medium for preserving low concentrations of phages of all genotypes.) The tubes are then assayed and the relative numbers of the two genot3 r pes determined.
