![of preceding writers; and little has been ad- vanced in their works towards the institution of any clear and practicable system for effectually eradicating the disease. This, I trust, will fully plead my excuse, for entering into the discussion of a subject of such importance, and so imme- diately connected with the welfare and happiness of society. Nevertheless, in doing so, I am thoroughly con- scious of the difficulties ] have to combat, and the disadvantages I labour under, as well from the reserve with which any new practice is re- ceived by a considerable part of the profession, as the prejudices entertained by some of its mem- bers, prematurely considering any deviation from the beaten track as an unjustifiable innovation on established rules.
