    During the fifty-two weeks of the year 1881 (terminating on Saturday, December 31), the Returns of the Local Registrars record 20,762 births and 14,7o3 deaths within the City; the numbers for the corresponding period of the previous year, 1880, were 20,783 births and 14,811 deaths. Of the births 10,510 were males and 10,252 were females, making the total Birth-rate of the City equal to 37*5 per 1,000; the average of the previous ten years being 38*3.
