    what we have seen to be the correct way, viz. in an upward direction. Horizontal tubes are placed near to the room. The pressure of the outer air is suffi- cient to cause it to rise through these tubes into the room in a vertical current, which is clearly defined for some distance above the top of the tube, so that while a candle held over the tube is im- mediately blown out, when it is held just outside the current of air its flame is scarcely perceptibly affected. Higher up, the current of cold air separates out like a fountain, and mixes, as before described, with the air of the room. No draught whatever is caused by these tubes unless they are placed so that the current of air is interfered with by projections, &c, and the amount of air coming in may be controlled by means of a valve. This plan also affords great facilities for the removal of suspended substances, soot, &c., from the air, either by placing a long muslin bag inside the tube, or by a patented device which con- sists in deflecting the air as it enters the horizontal tube from the outside upon a surface of water in a tray, so that the suspended particles fall into the water. Generally speaking, in dwelling-rooms the chim- ney affords a sufficient escape for foul air and forms the exit shaft of the room, though it may not be suf- ficient if much gas is burnt, unless the products of its combustion are carried away by special tubes.
