![_ BRINGING UP THE NORMAL CHILD HAT constitutes normality? That is a W question that we must clearly settle at the outset. It is a question far easier to ask than to an- swer. Indeed, were we to attempt to answer it in detail, we should have space left for nothing else. But for the present purpose it will suffice to say that “normality” represents a condition of average adaptation to the existing or normal envi- ronment. Mr. Burbank’s specially developed vari- eties of flowers and fruits may be considered normal if they are adapted to flourish under the conditions of specially prepared soil, artificial cultivation, and general horticultural care that obtain in his gardens. The perfected variety may be quite unable to fight its way in a wild environ- ment; and yet it may be perfectly normal in the view of the plant developer. So it is with the human plant. The environ- ment of civilization is in a sense abnormal.
