    2.1 General 2.1.1 Before administering any immunological product, attention should be paid to the following points: a. The leaflets supplied with the product and prepared by the manufacturer in consultation with the Licensing Authority should be read (but see Preface). b. The identity of the vaccine must be checked to ensure the right product is used in the appropriate way on every occasion. c. The expiry date must be noted. d. The batch number must be recorded on the recipient’s record. e. The recommended storage conditions must have been observed. 2.2 Reconstitution of vaccines 2.2.1 Freeze dried vaccines must be reconstituted with the diluent supplied and used within the recommended period after reconstitution. (See 2.7.2) 2.2.2 Before injection the colour of the product must be checked with that stated by the manufacturer in the package insert. The diluent should be added slowly to avoid frothing. A sterile 1 ml syringe witha 21G needle should be used for reconstituting the vaccine, and a small gauge needle for injection (see 2.8). 2.3 Cleaning of skin 2.3.1 The skin should be cleaned with a suitable preparation (eg mediswabs). Alcohol must be allowed to evaporate before injection of vaccine since it can inactivate live vaccine preparations. 2.4 Route of administration a. By mouth. Oral poliovaccine must NEVER be injected.
