The prices charged by the apothecaries in a city so far north as Aberdeen we might naturally expect to be somewhat higher than those demanded in ])laces like London or other .southern cities, but it seems to me that for many of his drugs Mr. Gordon’s charges were excessively high, even at that period. Jn the preface he offers some exj)lanation u[)on this subject, and I think it may be safely inferred that the prices ruling in Aberdeen were below those in this catalogue, Prices per ounce :— Human fat 1’^/-, Axungia 1/-, Goose grease 1/- , AVhite wax 4/- , Yellow wax 2/- , Htai’ch [ amidi officinarum ] 1/- , Common Armenian Pole 2/-, (.Colophony 2/-, Ichthyocolla 1/-, liicpiorice juice 8/- , Calabi’ian Manna 12/- , Tobacco confected with oil of ani.se 16/-, Valerian root 3/-, Sal Ammoniac Sal Gemime , Sal Petre, Spermaceti, Confect. Pos;e and Acpia Forti.s, each 6/-, Sarsaparilla 10/-, L’efined Sugar, Sulphur vivum, and Linseed oil each 2/., Oil of sweet almonds. Sugar of Lead, I\Iercurial Ointment (pro morbo gallico),each 8/_, White Soap, Lead Oint- ment, Marshmallow Ointment, and Ginger Koot, each 3/., Acetum Scilhe, Itch Ointment, Diachylon Plaster, and Oil of Juniper, each 4/., Spiritus A^ini or Aipia Vita3, Senna Wine, Sulph Citrin, and Kitchen Sugar, l/-> Egyptian Mummy 2/. per drachm, Chamomile Flowers 1/- the half handful. The above few items are 1 think sufficient to enable the reader to form an idea of D. Gordon’s general rate of charges which are very fully stated in the thirty
