    SPINAL CURVATURE. CHAPTER I. THE PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN IN THE PAST AND AT THE PRESENT. It is a well-known and generally recognised fact that with the advance of civilisation and the improve- ments in our mode of living, diseases have become more numerous. And it has been said justly that the present generation lives under the ban of a lack of vitality and nervous disorder. We should not err in attributing to this advancing civilisation a correspondingly retrograde movement in respect of physical development; but, on the other hand, there has been an increasing desire to promote general health, and to subdue disease, which statement will be clearly established if we look back upon past history.
