The v/orst of the houses have been or are now being dealt with, but the younger generation in turn marry, beget children and demand not only houses, but houses ° a ]4g'ner s^and-?rd. This, although a problem, is a healtlysign as it indicates a staole community with a progressive and positive outlook. Better standards are obvious as a comparison of the population and housing figures for 1931 and I960 .nil show, viz., in 1931 a population of 7*285 lived in 1,650 houses or an average of 4.4 persons per house. This figure for I960 is 3,06 persons per house, me standard of amenities to the houses has also improved. A house with a bath, an indoor or adjacent water closet and other facilities is rapidly becoming the generally accepted standard for housing. The modem housewife demands many labour saving devices and most houses have them. This improvement not only takes place inside the house; the external walls, doors and windows are cleaner, neater and show evidence of pride and the overall effect of prosperity in the community. A material factor in this housing advancement has been the implementation of Discretionary and Standard Grants made by the Council.
